China has charged two Canadians with espionage, more than half a year in prison.

Michael Cougarg, a former diplomat, and Michael Spever, a businessman, have been arrested in China since December 2018.

Both have been accused of "spying on national secrets" and providing intelligence to "outside agencies".

He was arrested after Meng Wenzhou - a Huawei executive was arrested in Vancouver.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was "disappointed" that China had formally charged the two Canadians.

He said, "We are surely upset with the Chinese pronouncement in the case of the two Michaels,".

Canada called the arrests "arbitrary", but China denied it was retaliation for Meng's arrest.
Meng Wenzhou - The daughter of Huawei's chief financial officer and the company's founder was arrested on December 1, 2018 in Vancouver.

The International News Agency says the United States has requested his arrest. The United States has accused Iran of violating sanctions.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused China in September of "using discretionary surveillance as a tool to achieve political goals."

Michael Corrig's employer, the Crisis Group think tank, says he has not seen his family's lawyer since his arrest.

"The Michael's work includes meetings with Chinese officials, academics and analysts at various Chinese state Academies."

He attended several conferences at the invitation of Chinese organizations. He often appears on Chinese television and other media to comment on regional issues.

"Michael's actions have done no harm to China."
